Grass can grow and flourish any time of the year given the proper care. But if it's neglected, getting your grass to grow can be a severe challenge.
FAQ:
How long does it take grass to grow?
We plant different varieties of grass depending on where the grass is being planted. Most of the time, it will be a mix of quick-grow and higher-quality, blue grass seed. The quick-grow should germinate within a couple of weeks, whereas it can take up to a month for the rest of the grass to start filling in.
How often should I water my grass and/or grass seed?
#1 Water your grass thoroughly 2x a day for the first several weeks after it was planted. Once you see good germination, you can slow the watering to 1x daily. After two to three months, you should be able to slow the watering unless the climate is particularly dry in your area. Grass will need consistent water for at least the first year after it was planted.
When and how should I cut my grass seed for the first time?
It will take a while for your newly planted grass to fill in completely, but once you've noticed a significant increase in the density of new grass sprouts, and the average sprout is over 8" tall, you can cut your grass.
If there is an erosion mat laid down on top of your grass, make sure it is properly pinned down, and mow over the top of it. This will stay in the ground and is fully biodegradable.
We recommend using a push mower for the first and second cutting, as the mower is lighter and is less likely to crush the new grass.
What happens if weeds grow?
Any time you dig up old soil or install new soil and seed, it leaves the opportunity for weeds to grow. Do not worry! This is normal. Eventually, as long as the grass seed is properly cared for and mowed, the grass should drown out most of the weeds. It takes time for a lawn to really fill in.
This process can be accelerated by fertilization and spraying a broad-leaf killer. Do not spray your newly planted grass until several months after it has germinated and taken root.
